I’ve been suffering from overwhelm recently. Yes! it happens to psychotherapists too. And when it hits, it affects every aspect of my life, especially my executive functioning, which takes an even bigger knock than usual.

When I’m overwhelmed, I go into what I can only describe as a kind of paralysis state, almost like hibernation. I don’t move, I don’t think, I don’t feel. It can be quite distressing for those around me, and it isn’t a pleasant place to be.

Lately, I’ve started to spot my own “shut down” warning signs. So instead of leaning into it, I decided to do something completely different, I became a DJ for an independent South Yorkshire radio station.

So far I’ve DJ'd one show. I turned up 30 minutes late, had to completely wing it, but somehow I managed to finish the show and luckily, the station forgave me. That, if anything, shows just how much my time management and planning have declined lately.

Still, I’m now officially on air every Monday night from 9pm to midnight. And you know what? It actually suits me. My nocturnal circadian rhythm fits the late-night slot perfectly, and as it’s an 80s show, I get to play music I absolutely love. I lean fully into the Alan Partridge vibes, pile on the cheese, and it genuinely lifts my spirits.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this approach to everyone heading into overwhelm, sometimes we do need to lean into rest, but other times we need to throw ourselves in the opposite direction. For me, right now, the DJ-ing is helping. I’m still skirting the edges of overwhelm as my response time to emails is longer, and mistakes are creeping in, but I’ll weather the storm, hopefully in one piece.

In the meantime, please support BLAST Radio and tune in on a Monday night. You don’t have to be in Yorkshire or come from Yorkshire to boogie along with me and the team at BLUNT RADIO.
