'Curiosity Killed the Cat' Blog by Clare Fisher Psychotherapist

Most of us are familiar with the old proverb “Curiosity killed the cat” and if you’re a youth of the 80’s it may be because of the beret-wearing band of the same moniker.

The sentiment behind these words warns the reader of the dangers of curiosity and its associated wondering, questioning and learning, which can lead to risky behaviours and situations.

Because I am curious, I looked into the proverb and found its actual wording is  “Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back”

This, suggests that being fulfilled and content with the status quo (not the band) is the ultimate protection from danger. After all according to Greek Mythology, was it not curiosity that propelled Pandora to open the box resulting in the release of hardship into the world?

At face value, curiosity appears to have its perils, which should be avoided in favour of travelling nonchalantly through our world securely within apathy. However, without curiosity would the desire to physically travel be present and without enquiring minds we wouldn’t have trains, planes, automobiles and space crafts. Human survival and development stem from birth, and the magical exploration of the world starts with taste, touch, sound, and smells.  So why as adults do some of us become too ambivalent to be quizzical, losing the desire to query the unknown, even if we are not rewarded with the satisfaction of an answer?

The hit 80’s song Misfit by Curiosity Killed the Cat tells a different story with lyrics like “How long? How low? How high can you go?”  and “You need to satisfy your soul” according to my inquisitive lyrical deep dive, I have concluded that curiosity is a journey sometimes without an end and that satisfaction comes for the act of metaphorically travelling even as if it’s as a Misfit.

Here are some of my curious thoughts of today;

  • Who left that glove on that rock, will a mouse make a home in it, will the glove disintegrate and if so how long will the process take, is it now cold enough to wear gloves, does the glove feel sad to be without its mate?

  • If I climb the hill with mobile phone ariels on top of it will it fry my brain, will the antennas make an audible noise, will I feel energy from the masts, how far can they transmit a signal, where are the power cables, are they underground, is there a base under the hill full of people listening to the transmissions, do the antenna transmit through satellites or across the land?

  • Why are freeze-dried foods more expensive than pickled foods, if the freeze-drying process removes water is it the water that makes food spoil, if you pickle food you add water to vinegar so why does it not spoil due to the water or does it spoil quicker?

  • Why do I need to defrost  ‘beyond meat’ burgers from the frozen section before cooking them when other frozen burgers can be cooked straight away, are plants considered to be beyond meat and if so what is beyond plants?

  • Why can people see my eyes through my sunglasses if they are also wearing sunglasses, but they can’t see my eyes when they are wearing normal glasses or no glasses?

Okay, I can go on and on and on and on………………. but I won’t stop being curious because the question satisfies me even if the answer avoids me.

STAY CURIOUS!
